MVMT50 Hosts “Awkward Black Girl” for Social Hour

HBO producer and popular YouTuber Issa Rae to sign new book, MVMT50 to promote diversity in tech

AUSTIN, TX, October 28, 2015 – On Friday, October 30, MVMT50 will host YouTuber, author, tv producer, and Entertainment Weekly’s “Breaking Big,” star Issa Rae for a social happy hour. Open to the public, the event aims to gather Austin’s diverse community of digital thought leaders and innovators for an evening of conversation and connection. Along with a signing of Issa Rae’s highly acclaimed book, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” attendees will learn about MVMT50’s planned programming for SXSW Interactive 2016.

MVMT50 serves as one of SXSW Interactive’s partners dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion at the festival, particularly elevating conversations impacting the black diaspora in technology and the digital space. While conversations and efforts surrounding diversity shortcomings in the technology and digital space have increased, MVMT50 is a community of resources that serves to centralize conversations and efforts to ensure a comprehensive approach to diversify the tech industry, driven by the insights and the intellectual capital of black thought leaders.

From March 11 through March 15, SXSW Interactive participants are invited to engage in the movement. MVMT50’s confirmed programming for 2016 includes:

       MVMT50 Welcome Reception

       Innovator Awards

       MVMT50 Day Party

       Diversity Expo

       <div> Hackathon

       Innovators Dinner

For the 6th consecutive year, MVMT50 will work to add colorful conversation to SXSW Interactive. This Friday will serve to preview those efforts in anticipation of March 2016.

With over 20 million views on her YouTube channel “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” writing and producing credits for HBO’s newly announced comedy “Insecure,” co-produced by Larry Wilmore of Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show, Essence magazine’s 2015 game-changer, Issa Rae offers a blueprint for digital disruption. You can catch Issa earlier in the day leading a conversation on The Creative Career: Practical Tips for Starting Out at the 2015 Austin Film Festival.
