Conversation Corps is a way for all Austinites to get involved at convenient places, near your home or work. Each month, one-hour conversations are hosted on a different topic impacting the greater Austin community. Your input goes directly to decision-makers at the City of Austin, Capital Metro, and Austin Independent School District. Learn more: www.conversationcorps.com.
Recent violent events in Orlando, Baton Rouge, Falcon Heights and Dallas have deeply impacted our nation, communities, and each of us as individuals. In the aftermath of these tragedies, the goal of this month’s conversations is to bring us together in a way that will help us heal and enable us to understand each other despite our differences. We all know that events like this may be polarizing and potentially deepen divides in the community. This is why Conversation Corps and iACT are committed to fostering dialogue to help bridge potential divides, foster empathy and increase understanding within our communities.
While our conversations usually address an upcoming policy decision, this month Conversation Corps is partnering with iACT to step away from a specific directive and rather focus on the power of dialogue itself. Although feedback from this conversation will may not immediately influence a public policy decision, it is important to Conversation Corps and all of its partnering agencies. Therefore, the feedback will be reviewed by representatives of these organizations and may be used in the future to evaluate public engagement practices and to shape conversations that best meet the needs of the community. For today, the goal of this conversation will be to cultivate a space of open communication and civic dialogue while grappling with very difficult issues.
